Last Sunday, November 11, 2012, I joined the World Diabetes Day Walkathon & Fun Run 2012 with two of my colleagues. It was organised by Malaysian Endocrine and Metabolic Society (MEMS) together with the respective diabetes care societies and corporate companies with the support of the Health Ministry. The World Diabetes Day 2012 campaign marks the fourth year of the five-year focus on Diabetes education and prevention.
World Diabetes Day takes place on November 14 every year. The date was chosen because it marks the birthday of Frederick Banting, who along with Charles Best, is credited with the discovery of insulin.
We collected our T-shirts and bibs after work on Friday, November 10, 2012 at Wisma OCM, Jalan Hang Jebat, Kuala Lumpur.
We were flagged off by the Youth and Sports Minister, Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek at 7.30 am. More than 2,900 people participated in the event. The 5km walk started and ended at Dataran Merdeka, Kuala Lumpur. We received a certificate of participation and a goodie bag upon completion.
There were rounds of lucky draw after the walk... no luck there :(Till next week, let's support the World Diabetes Day today!
